What is the 16:9 aspect ratio?
The 16:9 aspect ratio is the widescreen shape where the image is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall, which works out to 1.78:1 as a decimal. It's the HD standard, so almost every modern screen you own is built around it.
That single number, 1.78, is what makes 16:9 feel familiar. It's wider than it is tall by a comfortable margin, close to how your eyes naturally take in a scene. Reading it back: 1280x720 packs 0.9 megapixels, 1920x1080 doubles that to 2.1, and 4K at 3840x2160 jumps to 8.3 megapixels, which is four times the detail of 1080p. The 8K row hits 33.2 megapixels, sixteen times a 1080p frame. They're all the same widescreen shape, so a 720p video and an 8K video crop identically; you're just adding pixels, not changing the frame. That's why upscaling 720p to 4K never distorts the picture.
How do you calculate a 16:9 size?
To get a 16:9 size, multiply the width by 9 and divide by 16 to find the height, or multiply the height by 16 and divide by 9 to find the width. That's the whole formula, and it works at any scale you throw at it.
Here's a worked example using the most common case. Start with a width of 1920 pixels. Take 1920, multiply by 9 to get 17,280, then divide by 16, which gives you 1080. So a 1920-pixel-wide frame is 1080 pixels tall in 16:9, and that's your 1080p resolution. Run it the other way and it checks out: 1080 times 16 is 17,280, divided by 9 is 1920. Is 1920x1080 a 16:9 resolution?
Yes. 1920 divided by 1080 equals 1.78, which is the 16:9 ratio. Divide each side by 120 and you get 16 by 9 exactly, so 1080p is the most common 16:9 size there is.
What resolution is 16:9?
